In an emergency meeting held this Friday in Shanghai with several major beef-importing companies, the Chinese government revealed some of the guidelines that will govern beef imports once the safeguard measures —set to be announced on November 26— come into effect.
In summary, some of the points the government said will change following the implementation of the safeguard are:
1. more strict Customs inspection, and more frequently
2. quota set for all imported goods
3. suspend some plants, especially those companies with several plants
4. strictly limit the loans provided for import beef
During the meeting, it was stated that it is “clear” that imported beef has caused a “serious impact” on domestic production, and therefore the government departments involved “must take measures to protect the national livestock sector in order to avoid destructive effects.”
